2001 Kayaking and Glacier Trip
Gallery
Summer 2001 was the inaugural
season for our kayaking trips. We made one day trip through the islands of
Yakutat Bay and four trips through the ice of Harlequin Lake. First up is
a tour if the islands that shelter Yakutat's harbor. The aerial photo
shows only part of the island system, with long narrow passages that are
teeming with life. We had pods of porpoise come up for a curious look,
before we landed on Khantaak Island for lunch and a short hike. Across the
island, we were greeted by the spectacular view of Mt. St. Elias and the
Malaspina Glacier. This gorgeous day was in the middle of September,
with Coho jumping all around us:

Harlequin Lake is huge, with
North America's largest fresh-water glacier - the Yakutat Glacier. There
is an old logging road that heads 40 miles out of town before ending in the
middle of nowhere at the Dangerous River. A short shuttle upstream into
the lake begins a week-long odyssey into a real wilderness without any touch of
humanity. After loading up the kayaks with our gear, we head out
through the maze of passageways between the massive icebergs:

From our launch-point at the lake outlet, it is eight miles to the
glacier's face. Depending on the skill level and fitness of the
group, we could either cross the entire lake, or choose from several
great camp spots along the way. We usually chose to enjoy the journey
through the bergs and make the crossing in two days:

This is the view from camp one, followed by a day of exploring around camp
two:

The remaining days of the trips were spent exploring the unbelievable
landscape around the retreating glacier, paddling along the face,
watching mountain goat out on the glacier, hiking along the tumbling salmon streams and scrambling up the rocky cliffs for
spectacular views:
