Another prize of the sport fishing world is the Steelhead and it exhibits many of the desirable traits of a salmon.  Growing to as much as 3 feet in length,  the Steelhead is actually a sea-run Rainbow,  but they are no ordinary trout.  Yakutat's rivers have a world-renowned reputation for Steelhead.

There are two fishable runs for this great fish.  The spring run opens our season in April and May,  as the snow is beginning to melt and again in  November and December,  as it begins to pile up.  This colder climate requires additional equipment,  so come prepared for the challenge of an Alaskan snow.

Steelhead are the fly fisherman's dream.  They are one of the most rewarding catches in the whole of sport fishing and worthy of every brag they produce.  Unlike salmon,  Steelhead return to the sea after spawning.  This can cause their numbers to be greatly effected by over-fishing.

The Italio Run

The world renowned Situk River - just 10 miles away from Yakutat - holds the largest wild Steelhead run in all of Alaska.  Although the New Italio is a very similar river to the Situk in many respects,  the Italio is much smaller and therefore has a much smaller run of Steelhead.  At this time,  Italio River Adventures does not recommend targeting the Italio Steelhead.  If you are looking for a Steelhead trip,  I'd be happy to make recommendations and suggest ways to access runs on some of Yakutat's other rivers,  but the Italio's fragile run needs time to build into a world-class fishery like its neighbors.
