Glaciers
The Yakutat area features the largest concentration of glaciers and ice
fields in the world, outside of Antarctica and Greenland.
More land here is covered with year 'round ice and snow than not.
Italio River Adventures has a variety of options, to explore this
frozen wilderness.
Up close and personal exploration to some of the most amazing glaciers
in the world, make a cruise through Glacier Bay seem tame.
The glaciers of Yakutat are so unbelievably huge that all others,
even by Alaska's standards, are dwarfed in comparison.
Whether you are interested in glacier excursions as an add-on to a
fishing trip, or as an in depth, multi-day experience,
Italio River Adventures is the place for you.
The Yakutat Glacier/Harlequin Lake:
From our facility on the ocean beach, we make the trip to
Harlequin Lake in about two hours by jet-boat. There is also an
old logging road that leads from town to within a half mile of the lake.
During the long and pleasant days of June, July and August,
you will want to spend days exploring this vast wilderness. The
Yakutat Glacier is the largest fresh-water valley glacier on the
continent. Its massive icy face, which calves individual
icebergs that would dwarf a football stadium, stretches over eight
miles along the water.
We begin by boating all the way up the Dangerous River from the beach,
or just the short distance from the end of the road, often
sighting bear and moose along the way. Once we reach the lake,
part of the Russell Fiord Wilderness, we transfer to our fleet of
single and double sea kayaks. Silently gliding through the massive
maze of icebergs is worth the trip alone. Crossing the lake to the
glacier itself is beyond imagination.
We have two possible packages for this amazing
destination. A six day/five night kayaking wilderness adventure
takes in the breathtaking beauty and awesome power of this spectacular
(no, I can't include enough adjectives to do this place justice)
area. For extreme variety and adventure, try our seven
day/six night combo kayak/float trip. Two days and nights kayaking
and exploring Harlequin Lake, followed by a three mile hike into
Italio Lake with two days and nights floating this pristine salmon
stream, finishing with three days and two nights at our main
facility on the ocean beach. Look in the TRIP
OPTIONS for more details.
Alsek
Glacier and Lake:
The world renowned Tatshenshini/Alsek River is the
only river mighty enough to penetrate the St. Elias Range.
Considered to be one of the three greatest scenic rafting rivers in the
world, the Alsek is the trip of a lifetime. Access to the
Alsek Lake is extremely limited, to protect this superlative
wilderness. We have applications in to access this area, but
until then, a scenic flight over the area can be added to any
trip, weather permitting.
As with the Dangerous River, Italio River
Adventures intends to approach from the Alsek from the ocean beach.
We'll begin in the large estuary known as Dry Bay, a maze of
channels and islands that is home to many nesting and endangered shore
birds. We travel up the Alsek by jet-boat, through boiling
white water, past giant bobbing icebergs. The spectacular
lake features two mighty glaciers, that calve a tremendous volume
of ice. The Grand Plateau Glacier trails off to the south,
right to the base of Mt. Fairweather (15,300 feet), while
the Alsek climbs thousands of feet before your eyes.
The Alsek is not an easy, casual trip and we'll recommend it only
for the seasoned adventurer. If this trip interests you,
please contact me directly to help us with planning and convincing the
government of the need to issue a permit.
The
Hubbard Glacier:
Week long sea kayaking trips to the Hubbard Glacier are available with a
variety of options. Previous
kayaking experience will be required, along with exceptional
health and fitness. The Hubbard is the largest tidewater glacier
in North America and one of the most active. In 1986, this
massive river of ice surged forward, sealing off the Russell
Fiord. Melting glacial run-off threatened the community of
Yakutat, as "Russell Lake" began to rise and potentially
overflow. The ice dam eventually broke through, but the
Hubbard is still surging. The glacier surged again in 2002,
plugging the gap with a gravel moraine dam, but the dam washed out
a couple months later. We expect it to close off the fiord
again in the near future.
The Hubbard is so huge that all scale of size is completely distorted.
More than a dozen mountains taller than any point in the lower 48 rise
right out of the water and ice. Much of Hubbard is over 20 stories
above the water's surface. If you have ever seen those
"little" glaciers from a cruise ship, you will quickly
forget all about them. Kayaking expeditions with Italio River
Adventures will be a trip you will never forget.
Scenic
Flight Tours:
Viewing these mighty glaciers from eye level is spectacular, but
for the more hearty adventurer. A bird's-eye view can be added to
any vacation, if weather permits. Make sure you bring lots
of film for this exciting trip.
