Fly
or Spin
Depending on the timing of your trip and the target of your efforts,
one method of fishing may be more successful than others. Skill
level also plays an important role in deciding which gear to bring and
use. Italio River Adventures' services are extremely well suited
for fly fishermen. Some portions of our season are exclusively
reserved for flies, although we do accept spin clients during the
Pink, Chum and Coho seasons.
Sockeye are extremely challenging for the typical
spin fisherman. Since we fish for chrome-bright sockeye fresh from
the ocean, spin fishing can be a near waste of time for them.
They react so much better to and for the highly skilled
fly fisherman. The New Italio's water is crystal clear during the
"drier" months, making this sight fishery an absolute
joy. We reserve our Sockeye season exclusively for our fly fishing
clients. As an added bonus, there are usually a few Kings
mixed in with every school of Sockeye. Hooking up with a King will
take you on a wild ride up and down the river, however we always
encourage you to release Alaska's state fish.
Pink, Chum and Coho salmon are equal opportunity fish. They
have no particular preference and either method will produce strikes.
All three will take wet, or dry flies with a variety of patterns.
Although flies are our preferred method, spin fishermen are
welcome throughout August, September and October.
During their peaks, Coho run the rivers in
an endless stream of flashing silver. Whether deep in the hole,
or flying through the air, Coho will hit at anything they see.
If you are looking for a challenge, you may just want to avoid the
Coho season all together. In October, they are known to
strike what seems to be before the fly hits the water. I have had
as many as four different fish on in the same cast, before finally
having enough time to set the hook.
Unpredictable
weather and water conditions can make dual equipment a good idea.
During the summer, storms and heavy floods rarely occur, but
fall can be a different story. September and October can turn
fly-casting into an adventure. We do have a some sheltered
locations with gentle currents, even during the most severe
weather.
Tackle and gear are not included and we do not
have a full service shop. Our collection of rods are intended as
"emergency back-up" and can be loaned out for free, when
needed. Each bunk room has its own fly tying gear for you to use
free of charge, with samples of our most successful flies.
We can sell you commercially tied flies, if you prefer. We
do not provide all your line and all gear for free for one simple
reason: I hate waste and wasteful fishermen. Most serious
fishermen prefer to use their own gear anyway and in the past,
free supplies only resulted in a lack of care and commitment to the
environment from our clients. The Italio is far too special of a
place to encourage that.
