Beachcombing
Between the Dangerous and Alsek Rivers, there are only about a
half dozen summer residents. Since they are usually occupied by
the commercial fishing industry, that leaves over 30 miles of
Pacific Ocean beach for you to explore on your own.
Log drifts and high dunes hold amazing treasures, from Japanese
glass floats, to old ship wrecks. You will nearly always come away
with a new prize, or cherished memory. The Italio River
Adventures facility sits just a few hundred yards back from the pounding
ocean surf.
Watch
whale, porpoise, harbor seal and sea lion bob in the surf,
or just off shore. On a clear day, the mountains are
absolutely spectacular, as they rise right out of the sea.
Kick off your shoes and play in the surf. It is chilly, in the
upper 50's, but refreshing on a warm summer day. Yakutat has
a growing international reputation as a surfing destination, so
consider borrowing one of our thick wetsuits. The beach along the
Italio Rivers is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the leisurely pace
of the wilderness.
