Hunting
and Wildlife Viewing
Waterfowl Hunting:
The entire Yakutat region is a hunter's and outdoorsmen's paradise.
The fishing is spectacular and so is absolutely everything else.
As the St. Elias Mountains tower along the Pacific coast,
the Yakutat Foreland narrows to only a seven-mile wide chute.
Every single migratory waterfowl along the Pacific flyway must fly over
this narrow strip of land. These rocky cliffs come closest to the
ocean beach between the Italio and Akwe lakes, right in the heart
of our roadless wilderness.
The
start of duck season in September is truly an amazing time. As the
month passes, the volume and variety of waterfowl increases to its
peak in mid October. All the while, the Coho salmon run
comes to its own dizzying crescendo. On September 21st,
Canadian Geese are added to the mix, while Sandhill Crane and a
variety of other beautiful avian make their way to warmer climate.
If you prefer to shoot with a camera, the massive and protected
Trumpeter Swan will dazzle you with their unusual song. Like a
huge kindergarten band, their out of tune honking will bring
laughter to the most hardened outdoorsman.
Wildlife
Viewing:
Italio River Adventures does not offer big game hunting. Other
than fin and feather, you'll have to "settle" for up close
viewing of bear, moose, bald eagle by the hundreds and wolf
in their natural surroundings. Most of these creatures have never
encountered a human in their lives. Yakutat has a larger brown
bear population than even McNeil, although they are more evenly
distributed. The best viewing time for bear is actually in the
early summer, when the wild strawberries are ripe. The
plentiful sweet berries bring the bear out onto the open beach
throughout July.
This past season, we enjoyed a sow with three tiny cubs, one
sow with a two year old cub and nearly a dozen solitary individuals.
We begin to see distinct personalities develop in our resident
population, as we watch their antics daily. These furry
behemoths out number the human population of the area by well over a 5:1
ratio... and those are just the ones we see.
In
the early 1970's, the moose population fell on very hard times.
What was once a thriving concentration became a rarity into the 1980's.
The moose have rebounded over the past decade, making their
presence well known around our camp. We have several occasions
each year where a cow and calf peacefully wander by, as we sport
fish along the Middle Italio.
Not long ago, client Roger Chamberlin had an encounter of a
lifetime. While readying his reel for battle against the charging
Coho, a young moose spotted this unusually dressed creature.
Having never seen a person, the moose curiously approached Roger
as he replaced his line. Not realizing a moose was nosing up only
seven feet in front of him, he was more than a bit surprised when
I told him to look up. His camera was close at hand, but do
you think he had the presence of mind to snap a few pictures on this
misty fall morning? Of course not! Just like watching a game
show, you always say you'd do better than the contestant.
Let's see if YOU can get that shot with the help of Italio River
Adventures.
