Sea Kayaking
Harlequin Lake and the Yakutat Glacier
Few areas of the United States are as wild,
pristine and inaccessible as Yakutat's major landmarks. Located
within the Russell Fiord Wilderness, Harlequin Lake is a
breathtaking place for a week of kayaking. Home to the largest
fresh-water valley glacier in North America, Harlequin Lake holds
some of the most spectacular scenery anywhere. The lake is
approximately six miles wide and over 13 miles long. Much of the
lake is absolutely clogged with giant icebergs, while the glacier
groans at the farthest end. Scarred hills drop
straight into the milky water, as tumbling salmon streams cascade
down between the peaks.
The Yakutat
is rapidly retreating, exposing great expanses of new land and
amazing geological formations. A hike through this wonderland is
like a trip back tens of thousands of years. Discover amazing
wonders around every corner of this spectacular place. We have two
possible packages for this amazing destination.
Hubbard
Glacier and Yakutat Bay
The glacier carved landscape of the Yakutat area
features a beautiful system of islands and sheltered harbors. The
remarkable view from the water is of a pristine and unspoiled
wilderness. There is not a single road, dock,
power line, or car on any of the islands. Although the main
body of Yakutat Bay is open to the waves and storms of the North
Pacific, the island system along the southern side creates a sea
kayaker's paradise.
You could easily spend weeks, even months enjoying and exploring
the Islands. Rich in geological and native history, Khantaak,
Knight and the other Islands harbor an amazing variety of life.
Formed by the final surge of a mighty glacier, the jumble of
forest covered debris remains undisturbed by modern man. Venture out a
bit further, beyond the islands and the deep water of Yakutat Bay
comes alive with the sea's majesty. Whale and porpoise curiously
come to you for a look. You are the alien in their world.
Once nearly extinct from the impact of Russian fur traders, Sea
Otter now play by the hundreds. Seal and sea lion haul out onto
the rocky shores and give birth on the multitude of icebergs.
At
the head of Yakutat Bay, the crown jewel of Alaska's glaciers
groans, moans and heaves gigantic walls of ice into the
milky-green water. The rapidly advancing Hubbard Glacier is the
largest tidewater glacier in North America, with ice towering 21
stories high. When you view the glacier from a kayak, your
heart will pound louder than the crashing cavalcade of ice. The
Hubbard is not the only spectacular glacier there. You'll be
surrounded by them. Across the wide glacier carved bay, an
even bigger monument to the ice age rests quietly. The Malaspina,
a piedmont glacier larger than Rhode Island, reminds us of what
the long-ago melted continental ice sheets looked like.
Why
is the ice age still alive and well in Yakutat? Those Pacific
storms collide with our mountains, of staggering height.
With Canada's tallest peak (Mt. Logan 19,565 ft.), the US'
second tallest (Mt. St. Elias 18,008 ft.) and another dozen
over 14,500 ft., it is no wonder the snow piles up so deep.
The snow compresses upon itself, into ice that is hundreds...
even thousands... of years old. Eventually, the ice
has to go somewhere and the weight pushes it down the steep valleys.
In a slowly crawling river, the glaciers carve their path down to
tidewater, where the Hubbard unloads its icy cargo. Other
glaciers become landlocked and pile themselves into a jumble of ice and
debris. These massive expanses of ice, such as the
Malaspina, eventually cover the land as far as you can see,
in alternating rings of color.
Whatever
you are looking for, Italio River Adventures will deliver.
"Up close and personal" encounters with mammoth glaciers,
amazing wildlife, spectacular mountains and pristine,
undisturbed shores. Look no further than Italio River Adventures.
Sea kayaking in the icy water of Yakutat Bay requires exceptional
health, strength and at least some prior experience. Guided sea
kayak trips to Hubbard Glacier and overnight trips in Yakutat Bay are
planned one at a time. Contact me about this
if it is something that interests you, since each trip requires
special Forest Service or Park Service approval. Since these trips
fall into the extreme category, we require that you meet some
additional physical and experience criteria. Contact us, or
the Forest Service directly for more information on Yakutat Bay
kayaking. While in town, you will stay at one of our
favorite B & B's, but the rest of the trip will be wilderness
camping. Sea kayaking can be weather dependant, itineraries
and routes can change at the last minute.
What Italio River Adventures offers:
We offer sea-kayaking trips on Harlequin Lake and
wilderness adventure packages that combine kayaking, hiking,
rafting, fly fishing, wildlife viewing, surfing...
