What to bring
What you need to bring along on your trip depends on what activities you
intend to do and when you are coming. One thing is for sure,
you will need a good set of rain gear and boots. Salmon require
fresh and clean water for spawning habitat and we get some of the
highest amounts of habitat on earth. Chest waders are not required
for fishing most of the Italio system. These are small rivers and
streams, with the channel often only a foot, or two deep.
We have chosen not to provide boots, rain gear and fishing
equipment for several reasons. The main one is that almost every
one of our clients have wanted to use their own specialized gear.
We do have a limited selection of gear, but it serves as emergency
replacement, rather than as primary use. The following is a
list of the most important items for each activity you have planned for
your trip.
General:
Several sets of warm and dry cloths.
No matter what the season, you can get very wet in a hurry.
We have a washer/drier in camp if you want to recycle and pack lighter,
but it is always better to slightly over pack.
DO NOT bring bear spray, or a
gun for bear protection. Your guide will always be armed with
either a gun, or a dog and is trained to handle aggressive bear
encounters. Bear spray only works when handled properly and that
rarely occurs. In addition, ADF & G conducted a study in
Denali and found that many bears LOVE the smell of pepper spray.
Don't waste your money by falling for the marketing nonsense.
Fishing:
Your fishing license and stamps - Fishing and hunting licenses are
available from several vendors in town and from the ADF&G
web site. YOU must remember to buy these before flying out to
the Italio. Otherwise, you may have to charter a trip back
into town on your own! We will have a representative meet the
Alaska Airlines flight and they "should" remind you of this
need.
Good rain gear and boots - We recommend good old fashion
rubber. Gor-Tex, or similar products will work, but
under extreme conditions they may fail to keep you dry. Chest
waders are not necessary to fish some of the Italio water, however
they can be very handy especially on the New Italio Wilderness Float.
Your favorite fishing gear:
*Rod and reel,
line, sink tips, leaders, flies and lures.
*Nippers,
small tackle boxes, split shot, pliers, vest,
etc.
*Obviously,
there are some specifics here that require a great deal of
consideration. Contact us directly for rod and line weights,
fly patterns, etc. Each species requires different gear,
so I won't list it all here.
*Polarized
sunglasses
Waterfowl:
Your state small game hunting
license, state duck stamp and federal duck stamp - Federal duck
stamp is available at any US post office, state licenses and
stamps are available from several vendors in town and from the ADF&G
web site. YOU must remember to buy these before flying out to
the Italio. Otherwise, you may have to charter a trip back
into town on your own! We will have a representative meet the
Alaska Airlines flight and they "should" remind you of this
need.
Shotgun and steel shot shells
We have some decoys and calls,
but you'll probably want to bring your own if you want to use them.
We usually spend most of our time jump-shooting, rather than
sitting in a blind all day.
Adventures:
We have all the kayaking equipment
you'll need, but it gets extremely cold near the glaciers.
Extra warm clothing is highly recommended. Swim trunks if you want
to swim, loads of film and extra batteries for photographers.
