2005 Kayak/Float Trip Photo Gallery

Jim was with us last year for an October trip from the main camp.  After hearing all about the wonders of our adventure trip from his friend John (who took the trip with me in 2003),  he decided to get the abuse himself.  Along for the ride is Sean,  our occasional part-time guide.  They shared a double kayak,  while I carried gear in my forward cockpit.  It was a good day to start out,  although the storm would hit us that night.  Since it was two guides and one victim...  I mean client,  we did some things we probably shouldn't have,  like paddling through a couple tunnels.  Please kids,  don't try this at home.  It was awfully fun though.  Also look through the 2006 galleries for Jim and John's next trip with us.  John in '03 wanted to get fishing right away,  so we skipped the whole glacier part of his trip and went straight into Italio Falls.  In 2006,  both Jim and John were together again,  so we paddled all the way to the glacier on a single day trip - on a spectacularly gorgeous sunny day.

Just before the sun set,  we had a mountain goat nearly come down into camp for a visit.  It was a spectacular day,  with thin overcast to knock the glare off the water.  It was the last time we would see dry weather till after the float was over.

A badly needed potty break and hot soup for lunch.  It was pretty miserable there for a while,  but the wind died down after lunch and we were back out on the water (and ice).
p1010132.jpg (104078 bytes) p1010133.jpg (139902 bytes) p1010134.jpg (115059 bytes) p1010135.jpg (117710 bytes) p1010136.jpg (129715 bytes) p1010137.jpg (158620 bytes) p1010138.jpg (106064 bytes) p1010139.jpg (150287 bytes) p1010140.jpg (134136 bytes) p1010141.jpg (160274 bytes)
A deep sink hole,  where a large buried chunk of ice melted away under the gravel and silt.
p1010142.jpg (149802 bytes) p1010143.jpg (63379 bytes) p1010144.jpg (71114 bytes) p1010145.jpg (107626 bytes) p1010146.jpg (85420 bytes) p1010147.jpg (68734 bytes) p1010148.jpg (84000 bytes) p1010149.jpg (68733 bytes)
The center of the glacier comes out to a point near shore,  then the face curves and heads back into the mountains for a few more miles.  It is a VERY wide face.  This side of the glacier is dying faster than the left side,  so it makes for some really interesting paddling.  What looks like grounded icebergs is actually crevasses you can paddle through,  with some sections of the glacier sloping down to below the water line.
p1010150.jpg (67898 bytes) p1010151.jpg (75473 bytes) p1010152.jpg (69523 bytes) p1010153.jpg (70182 bytes) p1010154.jpg (104522 bytes) p1010155.jpg (95836 bytes) p1010156.jpg (97714 bytes) p1010157.jpg (87054 bytes) p1010158.jpg (111853 bytes) p1010159.jpg (100645 bytes) p1010160.jpg (66932 bytes) p1010161.jpg (104537 bytes) p1010162.jpg (89980 bytes) p1010163.jpg (95863 bytes) p1010164.jpg (81118 bytes) p1010166.jpg (67970 bytes) p1010167.jpg (69533 bytes) p1010168.jpg (100369 bytes) p1010169.jpg (70208 bytes) p1010170.jpg (123106 bytes) p1010171.jpg (106276 bytes) p1010172.jpg (97555 bytes) p1010173.jpg (106141 bytes) p1010174.jpg (114248 bytes) p1010176.jpg (80468 bytes) p1010177.jpg (90231 bytes) p1010178.jpg (90683 bytes)
The really cool ice cave...  You can't capture that color of blue with a camera.  Something you just have to experience.
p1010179.jpg (85723 bytes) p1010180.jpg (87221 bytes) p1010181.jpg (96320 bytes) p1010182.jpg (84957 bytes) p1010183.jpg (96297 bytes)
Back at the campsite for night #2.  An early start the next morning,  paddling to the Italio Falls trailhead,  followed by some great fishing as the salmon get trapped below the falls before building enough courage to jump.  This particular trip held some of the best Dolly Varden fishing I have ever experienced.
p1010184.jpg (214793 bytes) p1010185.jpg (177050 bytes) p1010186.jpg (169735 bytes) p1010187.jpg (121946 bytes) p1010188.jpg (153787 bytes) p1010189.jpg (164849 bytes)
The float trip stars the next morning.  We ended up cutting our stay at the falls short by a night because of the heavy rains.  It was a good decision,  because it rained at least 6 inches while we floated the river.  Funny,  the fishing was really hot throughout the entire system.
p1010190.jpg (77960 bytes) p1010191.jpg (106283 bytes) p1010193.jpg (94543 bytes) p1010194.jpg (109582 bytes) p1010195.jpg (93930 bytes) p1010196.jpg (91888 bytes) p1010197.jpg (98063 bytes) p1010198.jpg (156973 bytes) p1010199.jpg (120879 bytes) p1010200.jpg (99675 bytes) p1010202.jpg (72903 bytes) p1010203.jpg (166836 bytes) p1010204.jpg (117048 bytes) p1010205.jpg (115648 bytes) p1010206.jpg (122518 bytes) p1010207.jpg (161049 bytes) p1010208.jpg (141429 bytes) p1010209.jpg (146396 bytes) p1010211.jpg (135508 bytes) p1010213.jpg (120165 bytes) p1010214.jpg (127459 bytes) p1010215.jpg (110669 bytes)
The float comes to a wet end,  but the rest of the days are perfect.  High overcast,  with the pinks,  trout and char biting like crazy on the Middle Italio.  We even caught a beautiful 17 inch rainbow trout (probably a juvenile steelhead) out of the Alder Hole.
 p1010217.jpg (153560 bytes) p1010218.jpg (141993 bytes) p1010219.jpg (134628 bytes) p1010220.jpg (138769 bytes) p1010221.jpg (156790 bytes) p1010222.jpg (105282 bytes)  p1010224.jpg (109415 bytes) p1010225.jpg (92615 bytes) p1010226.jpg (91137 bytes) p1010228.jpg (171346 bytes) p1010229.jpg (162268 bytes) p1010230.jpg (93466 bytes) p1010231.jpg (143212 bytes) p1010232.jpg (110186 bytes) p1010233.jpg (105650 bytes) p1010234.jpg (98340 bytes) p1010235.jpg (107242 bytes) p1010236.jpg (110757 bytes) p1010237.jpg (121304 bytes) p1010238.jpg (99761 bytes) p1010239.jpg (81775 bytes) p1010240.jpg (138666 bytes) p1010241.jpg (116137 bytes) p1010243.jpg (91205 bytes) p1010244.jpg (82895 bytes) p1010245.jpg (105690 bytes) p1010246.jpg (136312 bytes)
The Middle Italio held mostly trout and char,  with just a few pink salmon in the mix.

Just look at the spots on this chrome-bright sea-run cutthroat trout.  This is a HUGE cutthroat!

The pinks were coming in heavy into the Akwe River,  as the tide surged in.  We weren't the only creatures fishing that day,  but certainly the only humans within 20 miles!
 p1010265.jpg (121988 bytes) p1010266.jpg (70186 bytes) p1010267.jpg (53531 bytes) p1010268.jpg (61044 bytes) p1010269.jpg (62304 bytes) p1010270.jpg (112817 bytes) p1010271.jpg (126035 bytes) p1010272.jpg (101877 bytes) p1010273.jpg (135379 bytes) p1010274.jpg (103235 bytes) p1010275.jpg (123579 bytes) p1010276.jpg (136522 bytes) p1010277.jpg (77731 bytes) p1010278.jpg (108676 bytes) p1010279.jpg (117340 bytes) p1010280.jpg (33914 bytes)
OK,  so Jim's trip came to an end.  But...  Sean and I immediately headed back out for some more trout fishing.  Bamboo in hand,  it was a wonderful end to a wonderful week.  What a fat trout,  fresh out of the ocean!  We missed you of course Jim,  but as you can see,  we got over it pretty quickly...  :-)
