Where
in the World... Yaka-what?
Yakutat is a tiny coastal community about
half-way between Juneau and Cordova on Alaska's Gulf Coast. If you
visualize the long north-south boarder between Alaska and Canada,
Yakutat sits right at the bottom end of the line. Surrounded by
the tallest coastal mountain range in the world, the narrow strip
of land between the base of the St. Elias Range and the Pacific
Ocean is covered with thousands of tiny fresh-water streams and two
gigantic glacial torrents.
The
Italio River system enters the ocean about 25 miles down the coast to
the southeast from Yakutat. No roads connect the Italio to Yakutat
and no roads connect Yakutat to the outside world. This
"feature" has allowed the area to remain completely unspoiled
and wild, with tremendous salmon returns year after year.
Although Yakutat is tiny and isolated, access is easy with two
daily jet flights in on Alaska Airlines. The morning flight from
Seattle arrives early enough for you to be fishing before noon,
with a short 15 minute Cessna flight out to the Italio.
The Italio River facility is dead-center
between the mouths of the Akwe and Middle Italio Rivers, just a
couple hundred yards in from the ocean surf. Five different rivers
are within a short walk, or 4-wheeler ride down the beach.
Our remote location enables us to spend nearly every week of the year
completely alone in this pristine wilderness.

the main Italio River Adventures HomePage for more details, photo
galleries and other Alaskan vacation packages.
