Yakutat is a tiny coastal community about half-way between Juneau and Cordova on Alaska's Gulf Coast.  If you visualize the long north-south boarder between Alaska and Canada,  Yakutat sits right at the bottom end of the line.  Surrounded by the tallest coastal mountain range in the world,  Yakutat is isolated,  wild and pristine - even by Alaska's standards.  The smallest community in the world with daily jet service,  Yakutat is connected to Seattle and Anchorage with direct flights on Alaska Airlines.

yakutat.jpg (180598 bytes)There are thousands of named and unnamed glaciers surrounding the Yakutat area.  Most are completely inaccessible,  although several of the largest and most spectacular can be reached - notably the Yakutat Glacier on Harlequin Lake and the Hubbard Glacier at the head of Yakutat Bay.  Both are tremendously huge with Hubbard ranking as the largest tidewater and longest valley glacier in Alaska.  Yakutat is the largest freshwater glacier,  terminating in a lake rather than the ocean.  Both are within the Russell Fiord Wilderness,  leaving roads and tour busses a long way off.

See the main Italio River Adventures HomePage for more details,  photo galleries and other Alaskan vacation packages.
